Our Coastal Community...

The San Mateo coast, south of San Francisco, California, is one of the most geographically dramatic areas in California. From the beautiful sandy beaches to the magnificent stands of redwoods, fertile fields of local vegetables and flowers are in abundance along with our coastal mountains covered with chaparral.
The Coastside is made up of two regions, with the town of Half Moon Bay the heart of both.
The Northern Mid Coast Region
is made up of Montara,
Moss Beach, El Granada, Princeton-by-the-Sea,
and Miramar.
The Southern Region is made up of
San Gregorio, La Honda, Loma Mar, Pescadero and Ano Nuevo,
and is known as the South Coast.
Historically the region was first inhabited by the Ohlone Indians. Then came the settlements of the European, Hispanic, and Asian immigrants in search of a new life. 1769 brought the Spanish explorers, led by Gaspar de Portola, in search of Monterey Bay.
After Mexico won its independence from Spain, the Mexican government parceled out the land for vast ranches. San Benito, one of the towns to emerge during this time, was subsequently nicknamed Spanishtown. It is currently known as Half Moon Bay.
